Hunter Valley Wine Tasting Tours - Peppery Notes in Shiraz?

Evidence is emerging that some of the distinctive aromatic notes in some wines may originate from plants that are close to the vines, as discovered on one of the many Hunter Valley Wine Tasting Tours.

Today I introduced Hilary from Dallas in Texas to the Aussie pepper tree.

Here she is checking out some pepper tree corns which often grow prolifically in close proximity to some vineyards of Shiraz in Australa.

The fronds of the pepper tree contain lots of very aromatic peppery oils.

The pepper tree berries are both aromatically spicy & gently warming when eaten, or used in cooking.

Research is underway to assess whether environmental aromatics, like pepper trees, may be the origin of peppery like notes in some Aussie Shiraz red wines.
